The first time I changed my kids diaper was terrifying! I wasn’t really scared of the diaper it’s just that little babies scare the hell out of me!
They’re so tiny and frail looking that I’m ALWAYS scared I might just break them on accident.
Everyone always says that it’ll be different when you have your own kids… NOPE!!!
My OWN kids scared me even more! I mean, this little baby was mine, and from the moment I first laid eyes on him, I would do anything to keep him safe.
Then I got put on Diaper Duty!
Logan was born early in 2012!
A few short hours after coming into this world, He got to take his first helicopter ride to the nearest “Baby Hospital” some forty five minutes away.
When he was born, he swallowed some fluid which caused him some rather serious breathing issues. It was one of the scariest moments of our lives!
He stayed in NICU for a whole month before he was finally able to come home! We nearly had a heart attack when that bill showed up!
It was in the hospital that I got to change my sons diaper for the first time under the supervision of his nurse and a very proud Mommy!
Saying I was nervous would be an understatement, but I worked through it and got that first diaper changed!
On a side note… you never realize how tiny a newborn is until you change their first diaper.
As time went on, I started getting the hang of changing diapers. I’d even say I was becoming a diaper changing master!
Until it finally happened…
The Great Diaper Blow Out of 2012
I remember it well… the memory is burnt into my mind!
My beautiful wife, Meli and I were about 10 minutes into our weekly grocery shopping routine when we “Heard It!”.
A few seconds later… the smell hit us like a truck… full of shit!
Our little guy just laid there in his car seat, sleeping! Like it was no big deal!
One of us had to look!
Of course, being the strong one, capable of dealing with just about anything that parenthood could throw at you, my wife gently leaned him forward to inspect the scene.
The look on her face said it all.
As we quickly made our way through the store to the bathrooms, assaulting every poor soul who happened to be in the produce section with the putrid stench, we had a quick argument over “Who” was going to take care of this.
Fortunately for me, this store only had one changing station, which was located inside the women’s room. I love you honey!
It took her almost thirty minutes and nearly a full package of wipes to clean up the mess.
We did come prepared with a full change of clothes for the little stinker… Thank goodness!
I do feel bad for anyone who had to enter that restroom after that.
As time went by, he had a couple more blowouts, but none hit us nearly as bad as that first time.
By the time Zoey was born in 2016, I had this diaper changing thing DOWN! I was ready!
Apparently, I had forgotten to take into account that when I first got to change Logan, he was nearly a month old from staying in the hospital!
She was WAY smaller than he was and looked even more breakable! No way was this little girl going to win!
Diaper changed… success!
Zoey never really had any issues with being changed. As I write this, she’s still sporting Pampers and we are preparing to start Potty Training.. so I’m hoping we’re safe!
She does have one little issue that Logan never really had though.
When I change her… I say “I” because she rarely does this with Meli… Zoey will LOCK her legs together at the ankles.
Do you know how impossible it is to change her like this?
It’s like changing a mermaid!
Somehow, diaper changing time with Daddy has become a “Game” for her and she’ll do everything she can to make it hard. To top it off, she’ll laugh the whole time!
It’s a damn good thing she’s so cute!
Hopefully, Potty Training will go as smooth as it did for our son.
Oh yea! Logan, a few days into potty training, just decided that he was DONE with diapers and has been doing great ever since with a few minor incidents. He’s also 100% healthy and happy even after the hospital stay.
Big Shout Out to the wonderful folks at Blank Children’s Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa for taking such great care of him!
I love my family with all my heart and can’t imagine how some fathers can just pass off “Diaper Duty” to everyone else. Sure, it’s not the best part of being a dad or parent for that matter, but it’s part of it and I wouldn’t want to give up ANY of it!
